“Gunz N’ Black Roses, is reflective of how intense a woman’s love can be! Too often times we hear the narrative of a man having women sprung, but the untold version is that a woman holds the power”, she adds. “It’s like playing with fire… be careful what you awaken, cause my love is like Gunz N’ Black Roses!”.
BS: How did your love for music came about?
BB: I’ve always been in love with music. I grew up in a household where my family played different types of music such as Motown. My mother is a big music lover. I grew up in church and my family singing. I was in a dance group and a marching band.
BS: What are some of your favorite R N B singers and groups?
BB: Ah man growing up, I used to love The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. THe fact that she sings and rap. I love Whitney Huston, Brandy and as far as groups, I love Total, SWV. It was so much great music in the 90’s.
BS:I want to talk about your single “Gunz N Black Roses. What was the inspiration behind it?
BB: Gunz N’ Black Roses, is reflective of how intense a woman’s love can be! Too often times we hear the narrative of a man having women sprung, but the untold version is that a woman holds the power”, she adds. “It’s like playing with fire… be careful what you awaken, cause my love is like Gunz N’ Black Roses!”.
BS: For your recent EP, how did you come up with the title “Clutch”?
BB: Well I always say clutch, anything that’s hot or dope, I’m always like ‘That’s Clutch!” It can be a conversation, an outfit, it could be that nap you just took, it could be this interview. But anything that’s dope to me is clutch. I wanted to make sure I had a melting pot for everything on the EP. I don’t just do one thing. I sing and I rap. I wanted to have something for everybody.
BS: Tell us more about you being a supporting vocalist to Nicki Minaji, Robin Thicke and Melanie Fiona.
BB: It’s been a great journey. I’ve been getting a lot of calls to do background singing. That’s been my bread and butter for years. I’ve been able to sing background for a lot of amazing people that I always look up to. It’s been a great experience and I got a chance to learn the business. I went on my first tour with Melanie Fiona in 2009. I was with her from the beginning and I watched her climb the ladder.
It’s been great! I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Singing background, people don’t always give them the respect that they deserve. We really just hold down the fork; there is a big community of background singers. Sometimes its hard to make that transition from a background singer to a forefront. I learned my voice singing with other background singers as well.
BS: How did you come up with the name Berry Boo?
BB: So Berry is my last name. Everybody knew my last name in highschool. They were like berry cakes, berrylicious and one of my friends was like you tag boo after everything and it just kind of stuck. My slogan is “Imberrydammit” That was my twitter handle since 2009.
BS: What new projects are you working on for this year?
BB: So I’m still promoting Gunz N Black Roses on like a national tour. We just did D.C. and we are going to Philly and Chicago hitting different markets with the Gunz N Black Roses single. I’m always in the studio creating. I just did an acrostic version of the single; a more of a stripped down version. I’m sure this year I will be putting out new music.
BS: How can people connect with you on social media?
BB: Website: http://www.ImBerryDamnit.com
