“I grew up with several paranormal events in my life. I am from New Orleans, Louisiana originally and my mother was delivered by a voodoo priestess. My family has quite a history with the supernatural”.
BLAQ STARDOM MAGAZINE: I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR NAME THAT IS VERY UNIQUE. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH IT? IS MAHOGANY YOUR FIRST NAME?
MAHOGANY SILVERRAIN: Thank you! My birth name is actually Kimiko, it’s Japanese and means noble child. When considering a pen name for myself, I wanted it to stand out and mean something and in 2009, I came up with Mahogany SilverRain. Mahogany for the mahogany tree. I am an earth sign (Virgo) and I’m very earthy and mahogany is the one of the strongest and long lasting wood there is. It is expensive and is favored by woodworking and furniture making, used for high-end commercial cabinet makers because of its beauty and durability. Like the mahogany tree, I have weathered the storms in my life and I am still here. As for Silver, well, I love silver because it shines brighter than gold and is the metal of emotions, the psychic mind, loving, and healing. I write romantic stories about love, loss and healing. Last, but not the least, Rain, which I capitalize on purpose, because rainwater is very powerful, it can destroy as well as create and make things grow. Rain is also about healing and refreshing. Mahogany SilverRain is about strength, love and healing. I write strong, loving black female heroines in my books.
BLAQ STARDOM: LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR PASSION TO WRITE. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?
MAHOGANY: It started when I was in my teen years when I began to journal. I had a diary, but I kept having these stories in my mind, so eventually I just began to write them down. Especially writing them as the characters, not myself. Poetry as well. It was cathartic for me when I went through some growing pains and personal trauma. I took a creative writing course in high school where my teacher introduced me to Katherine Woodwiss romance novels that were in the school library. I was hooked after that!
BLAQ STARDOM: YOU WRITE A LOT OF PARANORAL ROMANCE BOOKS WHICH IS DIFFERENT, I MIGHT ADD. HOW DID YOUR LOVE OF WRITING ON THAT GENRE COME ABOUT?
MAHOGANY: I grew up with several paranormal events in my life. I am from New Orleans, Louisiana originally and my mother was delivered by a voodoo priestess. My family has quite a history with the supernatural.
I remember one summer, my Mom did not get a summer job right away, and she used up her savings. One day, she set the table with plates and utensils, but there was no food being prepared. She called us to the table to pray. I thought she was crazy for a minute, but we sat at the table and prayed over the non-existent food on our plates. Withing minutes of praying, there was a knock at the door. My Mom answered it and it was lady we never met before. She held several brown paper bags grocery bags. She told my Mom, “I know you don’t know me, I am sorry to bother, you. I don’t know why I went to the grocery store. I don’t need anything, but I was passing by your house and something told me to stop here. Do you need groceries?”
My sister and I were astonished! My mom said “yes,” and sent us to help the lady unload about a week’s worth of groceries! She and my mom became best friends. Since then, no one will ever be able to convince me that prayer doesn’t work! Because of my spiritual background and the things, I have seen and experienced, (like inanimate objects moving on their own and seeing people that no one else saw), writing paranormal romance is as natural to me as breathing.
BLAQ STARDOM: HOW MANY BOOKS HAVE YOU WRITTEN OVER THE NUMBER OF YEARS? ARE ALL OF THEM THE SAME GENRE?
MAHOGANY: I have written about fifteen complete books over thirty years. Mainly short stories, and one novel published in November 2019. I have published fourteen with several more in the works for release this year. All in the same genre, but I will release my first adult fairy tale in September 2020.
BLAQ STARDOM: DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR WRITING STYLE YOU USE WHEN YOU ARE WRITING YOUR BOOKS?
MAHOGANY: It’s funny, my writing style seems to change according to the book I am writing at the time. I think it just depends on how the story flows in my mind. Sometimes, it is very descriptive and other times persuasive or informative.
BLAQ STARDOM: LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR RADIO SHOW MAHOGANY SAYS. WHAT WAS THE REASON OF CREATING THE SHOW?
MAHOGANY: I actually had no plans of ever doing a radio show! However, I met someone with a network that interviewed me and he told me I had a great voice and I would be great on the radio. He also had me come up with and create the show, the show’s logo and platform. I was a bit overwhelmed, but I did it. I was under him for a few weeks before I went out on my own. Now, I love it almost as much a writing! It has also opened doors for me, pulled me out of my comfort zone. I love meeting new authors and promoting them and found something else that I can do.
BLAQ STARDOM: WHAT TOPICS DO YOU COVER ON THE SHOW?
MAHOGANY: I cover mainly about books, authors and the publishing industry, but also inspirational stories, health and social issues, especially for women. In October of last year, I had a guest, Judy Allen, who survived breast cancer three times! This woman is a living miracle! She is also one of my sisters in my Red Hat Society Georgia Peaches group. I’m a pink hatter right now because I am not yet fifty, but this year I will be, Lord willing, in September and there will be a ceremony where I officially become a red hatter.
BLAQ STARDOM: BESIDES AN AUTHOR YOU ARE A FITNESS ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR WHICH SOUNDS REALLY INTERESTING. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR?
MAHOGANY: I love Zumba! I love to dance and I was hooked from the very first class I attended. I became a ‘front row diva’, able to keep up with the instructor. Sometimes when she would forget a move, I would do it and the class followed me. So my instructor let me direct a song or two to help me see if it was something I really wanted to do. I did! I took my Zumba training in Lawrenceville, GA in 2015 and attended my first Zumba convention later that year. I also took the World Rhythms course: India, specializing in Indian and Bollywood dance and it is one of my favorites next to belly-dancing, Salsa, Soca (Afro-Caribbean), and Cumbia. Even after two neck surgeries, right knee surgery and one back surgery, I still continue to dance, but mainly low impact. There is a course for Zumba Gold that is mainly for seniors, which I will be in a few short years, and I love the songs! It’s keeps me active despite my disabilities.
BLAQ STARDOM: I NOTICED SOMETHING INTERESTING IN YOUR BIO THAT YOU HAVE A PERMANENT SPINE STIMULATOR IN YOUR BACK AFTER YOU HAD INJURIES TO YOUR BACK AND NECK AND YOUR KIDS CALLS YOU “CYBORG” WOULD YOU CARE TO EXPLAIN WHAT THAT NAME MEANS?
MAHOGANY: My kids and I love the Marvel Universe and Cyborg is a fictional character that is human but with metal elements built into his body. It gives him supernatural strength and he has to charge his battery when it runs low. While the metal in my body does not give me super strength, it does help tremendously with pain. Like Cyborg, I have to recharge my internal battery located over my left hip, once a week with an external battery charger. That is why my kids call me a ‘cyborg’.
BLAQ STARDOM: ARE YOU WORKING ON NEW BOOK PROJECTS THIS YEAR? IF SO WHEN CAN WE EXPECT THEM TO BE RELEASED?
MAHOGANY: I have three that will be released this year, Passion’s Pride Alejandro, Nefari India’s African Queen and The Desert Flower, which will be part of the Once Upon A Villain’s Series Season 2 that I am writing with twelve other authors. It was created by Siren Allen and will include books by T.B. Bond, L.Loren, V. Vee, Sonja B., Dawn Ibanez, Diana Flame, and Love Journey to name a few, The Desert Flower will release on September 19th. Passion’s Pride Alejandro is the second book in my Passion’s Pride cat shifter series, the first is Leonessa. Hopefully, with a bit more editing, it will release the end of February or early March. Nefari: India’s African Queen will release in May tentatively.
BLAQ STARDOM: WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE AND READERS TAKE AWAY WHEN READING YOUR BOOKS AND LISTENING TO YOUR SHOW?
MAHOGANY: I want them to know that anything is possible. No matter what the obstacle, if they stay the course, they will win if they finish. Opportunity, blessings and even love, can come from anywhere or anyone, so don’t be so quick to judge or dismiss others unfairly. Use your imagination to create the life you want, be the best version of you that you can be. Above all, have faith and don’t give up!
BLAQ STARDOM: HOW CAN READERS CONNECT WITH YOU?
MAHOGANY: I am mainly on Facebook, but post daily on Instagram and Twitter.
