Eating the Forbidden Fruit is a gritty fiction novel loosely based on author Roland Sato Page life as a St. Louis police officer convicted of federal crimes due to his childhood affiliation. A tale of karma, confession, and redemption.
“So many people can relate to this. Law enforcement, family motivated individuals, and the young adults. Can you imagine a scared straight program for law enforcement? A individual telling you the consequences of unethical acts leading to a God complex mentality. Officers who want to enforce the law so passionately they’re willing to violate a person’s constitutional right.”
BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: AS A NEW AUTHOR, WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE FROM YOUR FIRST NOVEL?
ROLAND PAGE: Satisfaction of completion. I wrote “Eating the Forbidden Fruit” as a method to manage my symptoms of depression due to Lupus. This one is for my family legacy. My story was lost in translation. There were speculations of what occurred during my federal case so I wanted to clear my reputation.
BLAQVERSITY: TELL US HOW YOUR WRITING JOURNEY BEGAN? WHAT MOTIVATED YOU?
ROLAND: My wife and sons encouraged me to search for a optional hobby to distract me from my woes. I’m a former tattoo artist. Artist we have a six sense which can’t be contained. Once I couldn’t tattoo due to the Lupus. Things spiraled downward for me. I decided to write about actual events in my life. Of course I switched some elements around to respect the privacy of friends and family.
BLAQVERSITY: YOU BATTLE WITH LUPUS AND DEPRESSION AS WELL. HAS THERE BEEN ANY CHALLENGES OR MAJOR SITUATIONS YOU HAD TO FACE BECAUSE OF YOUR HEALTH? HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD LUPUS?
ROLAND: I was diagnosed in 2013. Lupus is a crazy disease, everyday can be a new obstacle. A blessing and a curse I suffer from insomnia. I haven’t released my first novel yet I’m on my third one. My wife complains I don’t get enough sleep. It’s hard. When I commit to something it’s hard for me to pause.
BLAQVERSITY: YOUR BOOK IS CALLED “EATING THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT” THE TITLE IS VERY EYE-CATCHING AND I AM DEFINITELY LOOKING FORWARD TO READING THE BOOK. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE TITLE AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK?
ROLAND: In the police academy or criminal justice classes where an officer indulge in criminal or unethical act, it’s classified as the Fruit of the Poisonous Tree. The forbidden fruit represents the temptations the uniform can expose you to. Some officers do unethical acts that can lead to criminal acts.
BLAQVERSITY: WAS THE BOOK BASED ON TRUE EVENTS?
ROLAND: Yes, it’s loosely based on my past career as a St. Louis police officer convicted of federal crimes because of my childhood affiliation. I had to maintain a level of privacy for some of the characters involved. It’s a tale of karma, confession, and redemption.
BLAQVERSITY: WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR READERS TO TAKE AWAY WHEN THEY READ THE BOOK?
ROLAND: So many people can relate to this. Law enforcement, family motivated individuals, and the young adults. Can you imagine a scared straight program for law enforcement? A individual telling you the consequences of unethical acts leading to a God complex mentality. Officers who want to enforce the law so passionately they’re willing to violate a person’s constitutional right. People hear of an officer being convicted immediately associate it with corruption. Actually it might be a dilemma like mine. If you had a choice to protect your family or childhood friends would you? Or would you serve them up to the law? By oath a officer is required to execute the law without prejudice.
BLAQVERSITY: ONCE THE BOOK IS PUBLISHED IN MARCH, ARE YOU PLANNING ON ANY MAJOR EVENTS WITH YOUR FIRST BOOK OR A BOOK SIGNING?
ROLAND: Yes I plan on a few local book signings as well as public speaking around the US.
BLAQVERSITY: DO YOU PLAN TO WRITE ANY MORE BOOKS IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
ROLAND: Eating the Forbidden Fruit is in the chamber ready for release March 30th, 2020. I have two in the barrel waiting to be published at later dates. “Skin Deep” is based on the temptations and drama of the Tattoo Industry; cosmetology preform hair care. As tattooists, we are exposed to the most intimate parts of a women’s body. I’ve witnessed a woman that had an orgasm while I was tatting her. On social media in the past, I had people take pics of me in the nightlife with women then send them to my kids. That’s the reality of drama in the industry and sometimes it was completely innocent.
BLAQVERSITY: HOW DO YOU PLAN TO MARKET AND PROMOTE YOUR BOOK?
ROLAND: Hard question; to the best of my ability. If you research me via social media or the internet, I was a urban music promoter, therefore I will use some of the same blueprint. My son, Yung Ro, accomplished the achievement of charting the Billboard Music charts four times independently. Never accomplished in the hip hop game in St. Louis not as a indie. I do keep in mind that the literary game is more for the academics. I hope readers realize for me to pull you into my world try not to be judgmental. A person’s environment differs according to their lifestyle.
I am open for suggestions and I have been reaching out to establish alliances with seasoned movers and shakers. I would like to thank Katara Paton from Washington for assisting my journey. People might know her from her work with Essence magazine and T.D “Jakes Zeola Gaye”, Marvin Gaye’s sister has been a great help also.
BLAQVERSITY: ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL WRITING TECHNIQUES YOU HAVE WHEN YOU ARE WRITING?
ROLAND: I go with the flow and then have my business partner proofread my work. My wife is my right-hand person. I’m a visual artist and our work has to be from the heart. The most important ingredient in my technique is staying humble. I’m a man with bad karma; arrogance doesn’t become me anymore.
BLAQVERSITY: HOW CAN READERS CONNECT WITH YOU AND PRE-ORDER THE BOOK?
ROLAND: Any 411 you want on me is on my website @ http://www.authorrolandpage.com
All my social media handles are @ https://itsmyurls.com/authorrolandpage.
