Sharran C. Taylor was born in, New York City, but she has called Virginia her home for some time now. But, growing up as a teenager in her hometown of N.Y.C. had a big influence on her desire to write. It was the Hip Hop culture emerging around her that sparked her own desire to write. Thus, it was her early experiences in life that would eventually lead her back to the art of writing. Today Sharran is an Author, Poet and Spoken Word Artist, who has a genuine passion for the pen.
“Like other authors I promote my work on Social media, but I find that going out and performing spoken word allows me to reach more new readers and make new connections”.
BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author began?
SHARRAN TAYLOR: In 2014 I found myself writing poetry as an outlet of self-expression, and I soon began to realize that writing was what I really wanted to pursue. Instinctively, I knew that I could combine my poetry with performing spoken word. So, I began memorizing a few of them to perform at Open Mics. I methodically adopted my poet name Kween Yakini, and my Writing/Artist career began.
BLAQVERSITY: Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue?
SHARRAN: No. Writing was always a hobby for me, but as an adult my writing turned into a real passion that I had to pursue.
BLAQVERSITY: Who motivated you?
SHARRAN: In the beginning it was mostly close friends and family, but later it was the responses that I received from people I barely knew that motivated me to keep going.
BLAQVERSITY: What are some of your favorite authors out right now?
SHARRAN: I am more connected to the authors of the past or who have been around for a good while. Like Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Niki Giovani and Phyllis Wheatly just to name a few.
BLAQVERSITY: Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
SHARRAN: As an author you must find ways to create opportunities through networking. And you must also be willing to invest money and lots of time into your work.
BLAQVERSITY: How many books have you written?
SHARRAN: I have written two books so far. I self-published my first book, a collection of poetry, titled “Woke: A Poetic Journey” in 2018 which is book about self-awareness, self-empowerment, self-love and connecting with ones spirituality. In December of 2019 I published my second book, another collection of poetry, titled “Ode To The Punani: Sensual Rising” which is a collection of poems that celebrates the vast levels of a woman’s sensuality and how she chooses to display her true desires. This book was recently released, and I have received good responses about it.
BLAQVERSITY: What is your genre?
SHARRAN: My genre is Conscious Poetry and Sensual Poetry, but I may look at other styles in the future.
BLAQVERSITY: What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your books?
SHARRAN: My intention in writing is to create and share vivid imagery and thoughtful reflections of life. My hope is that my readers will sense the passion and dedication that I put into my work.
BLAQVERSITY: Do you have any writing tips/suggestions for any new author who wants to write their book but doesn’t know where to start?
SHARRAN: I think that finding a good mentor is helpful if possible. Also, you must take the time to research your genre and learn as much as you can while staying true to your own style of writing.
BLAQVERSITY: Are you currently working on any new book projects? If so, when can we expect them to be released?
SHARRAN: I am currently working on my third book which is in the writing stage. I hope to release it by early next year.
BLAQVERSITY: What does being an author mean to you?
SHARRAN: Being a Self-Published author has been a great personal achievement and a true blessing for me. One year after publishing my first book, “Woke: A Poetic Journey”, I received an award from the Nat Turner Library.
BLAQVERSITY: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
SHARRAN: At this point in my life I’m following the path of peace, happiness, purpose and discovery. I’m okay with wherever that leads me.
BLAQVERSITY: Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?
SHARRAN: Being a full-time author would be great, but my success comes from being able to do what I love while inspiring others.
BLAQVERSITY: If you could co-author with any author in the world, who would it be and why?
SHARRAN: The late great Maya Angelou would be my first choice. Her personal journey to becoming a writer was very remarkable and I find her to be a fascinating woman.
BLAQVERSITY: Tell us about your marketing strategies as an author? Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?
SHARRAN: Like other authors I promote my work on Social media, but I find that going out and performing spoken word allows me to reach more new readers and make new connections.
BLAQVERSITY: How can readers connect with you and support you?
SHARRAN: Readers can connect with me on most Social Media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, but they can also reach me by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
Readers can help support by purchasing, reviewing, sharing and recommending my work to others.
My books are available on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com
