“Being an author means I’m not only a writer, but I’m a creator. I have this opportunity to create my own world and control what I want to happen. I have a chance to reach people in my own way and get several messages across in my books.”
BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author begin?
CHRISTINA FLETCHER: My author journey began in 2016. My husband was incarcerated and I would send him snippets of a couple of short stories I would work on for fun. He told me they were so good that I needed to combine them into a book and get it published. I took his advice and that’s when my first book, “I Can’t Trust You: Friends, Lovers & Lies” can to fruition. I had no idea I was going to enter a contract and keep writing books, but I did!
BLAQVERSITY: Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue? Who motivated you?
CHRISTINA: I discovered my love for writing after completing an assignment in the 10th grade where I had to write a short story. After a peer reviewer made an outburst in class about how good my story was, everyone started passing it around and reading it. From that point on, I would write short stories for fun. Again, I never thought I’d actually write a book and become an author. My husband’s encouragement gave me all the motivation I needed to keep writing.
BLAQVERSITY: What are some of your favorite authors out right now?
CHRISTINA: I have this newfound love for crime fiction, so my favorite author right now is Scott Pratt (may he rest in peace). I also enjoy books by Bianca Xaviera, Teri Woods, and Nikki Turner, my all time favorites.
BLAQVERSITY: Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
CHRISTINA: It’s been a challenge trying to secure a spot in this industry to become someone’s favorite author. In the almost four years I’ve been published, I think I’ve grown a pretty decent fan base, but of course, I’m still working on it. It’s been a bit of a challenge to figure out good promotional techniques.
BLAQVERSITY: How many books have you written? What is your genre?
CHRISTINA: I’ve penned and published 18 books, plus two additional books I co-authored for anthologies. I write in multiple genres, including, urban life, urban romance, young adult, crime, and suspense.
BLAQVERSITY: What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your books?
CHRISTINA: All of my books have a common message and it’s that people grow and change. It doesn’t matter what path you’ve chosen or the mistakes you’ve made along the way, there’s always an area of opportunity to make better decisions. No one is their past, but we’ve all been shaped by our pasts to create a better future for ourselves.
BLAQVERSITY: Do you have any writing tips/suggestions for any new author who wants to write their book but doesn’t know where to start?
CHRISTINA: I always say to just write. Of course you want to do the initial leg work of naming characters, developing characters, and creating a plot, but otherwise, just write. Don’t try to copy anyone’s writing style and allow yourself to develop your own. Write from you heart and be true to yourself.
BLAQVERSITY: Are you currently working on any new book projects? If so, when can we expect them to be released?
CHRISTINA: Yes! I am currently writing a two-part series titled “Trust, Love, & Loyalty: Beyond the Betrayal.” It is a MAJOR crossover of my three-part series “I Can’t Trust You: Friends, Lovers & Lies,” my standalone book “Nothing Is Promised: Vamp & Keyani’s Love Story,” and my three-part series “Loyalty Is Everything: Betrayal of Friends and Lovers.” All of those books already spun off each other, but after reading reviews, I have often seen readers mention they’d like to know the next phase of the story and what happened. Well, this series will address a few unanswered questions and it’s so full of drama! I plan to complete it and release it late Spring, so I’m aiming for the end of May. After completing that series, I’ll be going back to add a part three to my crime and suspense series The Justice Motive: Innocent of Murder.
BLAQVERSITY: What does being an author mean to you?
CHRISTINA: Being an author means I’m not only a writer, but I’m a creator. I have this opportunity to create my own world and control what I want to happen. I have a chance to reach people in my own way and get several messages across in my books.
BLAQVERSITY: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
CHRISTINA: Five years from now I see myself still writing, but solely in the crime and suspense drama and Christian Fiction, a genre I want to try my hand at in the near future. I also hope to have stepped out and become an independent author by then. My publisher Quiana Nicole has been an amazing mentor and has given me so many tools to grow and develop as an author and I’m more than certain that by then I’ll be ready.
BLAQVERSITY: Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?
CHRISTINA: I have, but I don’t have time. My other roles of being a wife, mother, social worker, and board member of Legal Services of Eastern Missouri take up a lot of time. Right now I like the idea of using my spare time to write because it’s therapeutic, but I don’t want it to become my sole career.
BLAQVERSITY: If you could co-author with any author in the world, who would it be and why?
CHRISTINA: If Scott Pratt were still living, it would be him. I am so amazed by his writing style and the common interest we shared for the crime genre. I believe together we would have come up with one hell of a story line.
BLAQVERSITY: Tell us about your marketing strategies as an author? Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?
CHRISTINA: As previously mentioned, it’s been a challenge to find a good marketing strategy that works for me. For now I’ve used Facebook ads, promoted in several groups, and done cross promoting with other authors. I’ve also invested in a promoter to help push my releases. Recently I’ve started handing out fliers locally because my books can be found throughout several libraries in St. Louis and I wanted my local readers to know that. It’s been a challenge to boost sales through my current marketing strategies, so I’m constantly looking for ways to get better with it.
BLAQVERSITY: How can readers connect with you and support you?
CHRISTINA: Readers can connect with me several ways, including social media, e-mail, and my website.
