Patrice: How would people describe your style and personality?
James Worthy: Usually I get what’s called “Dark R&B”, but sometimes it could be soulful or nostalgic. My personality can be laid back, but fun and vibrant when the time is right.
Patrice: What defines your success?
James Worthy: Success is what you make it or what feels good to you. I define mine as someone who loves what they do, and never stopped. It doesn’t hurt that other people love it too.
Patrice: What inspired you to get into the music industry?
James Worthy: Well I am from New York, so being around many musical legends and musicians, I was naturally sucked into being a music lover of all genres. I grew up studying artists, songwriters, and musicians to where at some point I wanted to be my own just had to figure out how.
Patrice: For both of your EP’s, where did the inspiration come from for the titles?
James Worthy: I’m a huge fan of theme- based projects so I wanted to create bodies of work that had meanings to them. They both tell stories from top to bottom in which “Blu Leisure” was the kick off. It represented life, emotion, and love. Later after “Kaleidoscopes” followed to be a continuation.
Patrice: Besides being an artist yourself, you have also written for artists such as Lil Zane, Sammie, Truth Hurts, Fettywap and more. Describe your writing style when it comes to music.
James Worthy: I write from what I feel at the current moment; I never force it or make something specific. It’s all about what feels strongly to me that can be relatable to another artist or person. Most times if I wrote a different way the song can be a hit or miss.
Patrice: You have also made a lot of Television appearances ranging from reality TV; “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” to “Access Hollywood.” Do you plan to make any more appearances on television anytime soon?
James Worthy: Yes, those appearances were cool to be on! I definitely plan on being back on the screen, a lot of television, and film projects are in the works so you guys will see me soon on your screens.
Patrice: Were there any challenges you have faced in your business/industry? If so, give us an example.
James Worthy: Plenty of them, but I would say the biggest would be people who didn’t believe in me to try, and discourage me or damage me in different ways. If you don’t have thick skin the game will throw you away. I had to learn those things as I moved through the industry.
Patrice: The entertainment, business and lifestyle industry can be pretty competitive and tricky. How do you separate yourself from all of the negativity people put out there in the industry itself?
James Worthy: Really just being myself, not caring about trying to be the most popular, but be the most influential. Consistency and catalog wins all.
Patrice: What has been some of your most memorable collaborations you have done so far? What made it memorable?
James Worthy: I would say working with my mentor Ecstacy of Whodini. We made a great record entitled “Move” off of Blu Leisure that was very special to me. The first day we met we created that song together.
Patrice: When you are not doing music, what do you enjoy doing?
James Worthy: I love to read, write, collect art, and travel!
Patrice: Where do you see yourself in five years in this industry?
James Worthy: Winning my first Grammy, starring in a feature film, signing artists to my company, and just continuing to grow my legacy.
Patrice: Are you currently working on any new projects?
James Worthy: Currently I am finishing my debut album that releases this summer, working on new collaborations, filming my documentary, and lots of other projects as well!
